Staying Filled: Letting God Have Every Room of Your Life
Episode Overview
- Freedom from addiction needs ongoing surrender, not just a one-time experience.
- Staying filled with the Holy Spirit requires giving God every area of life, without hidden “rooms”.
- Character issues that seem minor can open doors back to destructive behaviours.
- Love for God is shown through obeying his word, rather than just saying the right things.
- Prayer, worship and praise are vital, but lack power if key parts of life remain unsubmitted to God.
“Y’all got to understand, you got to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit. That means every dynamic of your life has to be filled with him.”
What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? Bishop Lance Johnson uses his own history with addiction to explain why staying spiritually “filled” is just as critical as getting free. This message speaks directly to anyone who’s broken away from alcohol or drugs, but still feels pulled back towards old habits and attitudes. You’ll hear Lance compare being drunk with alcohol to being under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
He points out that drink changes perception, behaviour and choices – and then shows how God’s Spirit can do the same, but in a holy, life-giving way. As he puts it, “Y’all got to understand, you got to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
That means every dynamic of your life has to be filled with him.” The heart of the episode is simple but challenging: getting delivered from addiction isn’t enough if big parts of your life stay unsurrendered. Lance talks about “rooms” in your life where the enemy can still take up space – things like unforgiveness, lust, anger, or “little” character issues such as always being late and refusing correction.
He shares a tough story of a gifted former addict whose refusal to let God deal with one character flaw eventually led him back to methamphetamine and the loss of his family and ministry. Scriptures from Matthew, Ephesians, James and John are used to underline the idea that love for God is shown through obedience, and that submission is just as important as prayer, worship and praise for staying spiritually full.
The tone is direct, sometimes humorous, and very practical, especially for people in recovery who know what it’s like to feel “10 foot tall and bulletproof” after a spiritual high, only to be empty by Thursday. If you’re sober but sense there are still “rooms” in your life you’re guarding, this message might nudge you to ask: what am I still holding back, and what could change if I let God have it all?
