I don't believe in wallowing in all of the things that we went through as a child. Not that we don't have a lot to feel sorry for, but we have to learn how to live in today's world. - Host
Picture a life that begins in the rough streets of Pittsburgh, navigating through the chaos of bookies, pimps, and survival hustles. This episode features Rev Henry (Hank) McGrath, a child abuse survivor who transformed his tumultuous beginnings into a mission of advocacy and support. Hank's story is nothing short of remarkable. Born into a struggling Irish family with alcoholic parents, he faced the world alone at a tender age.
By 11, he was already knee-deep in the gritty underworld of Pittsburgh. Juvenile detention and prison followed, marking a youth marred by hardship and crime. But Hank’s journey didn’t end there. In the 90s, he began confronting his childhood traumas and found happiness in marriage. After his wife's tragic death from cancer in 2001, he vowed to fight for others suffering from child abuse.
Now a minister, Hank is actively involved with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and serves as a court advocate for youth. His dedication to community service shines through as he shares his insights and experiences in this candid conversation. The episode also delves into pressing societal issues like gun control, homelessness, and mental health, highlighting their impact on children and the urgent need for a supportive society.
Laurie and Philip steer the discussion with warmth and empathy, making it a must-listen for anyone invested in creating a better world for the next generation.
