From Broken Dreams to Bigger Fights: Alvaro Núñez on Choosing Courage Over Comfort

Episode Overview

  • Hardship can become a long-term advantage if you choose to treat obstacles as chances to grow rather than excuses to quit.
  • Choosing the harder, more uncomfortable option is where real growth happens; comfort usually leads to stagnation.
  • You can use whatever you already have – a sport, a skill, a language or contacts – as leverage for new opportunities.
  • Pain is unavoidable but suffering is optional; channelling pain into a clear challenge or goal can transform it into fuel.
  • Big results come from consistent habits and routines over time, not overnight success or comparison with others.
All you need is all you have to get started, so do it anyway.

What drives someone to keep swinging when every plan falls apart? This Fight Like David conversation follows Alvaro Núñez from tennis-obsessed teenager in Madrid to luxury real estate and extreme endurance races – with a lot of pain, visa chaos and heartbreak in between. Rob talks with Alvaro about the moment his childhood dream cracked: being pulled off court at 15 to learn his father had suffered a heart attack and the family had “lost everything”.

Instead of chasing pro tennis, he used the sport as “leverage” for a scholarship in the United States, only to be stopped again by a broken foot, surgery and a lost tennis scholarship. Cue crutches, picking up rubbish, cutting grass for the maintenance department and rebuilding from scratch. Rather than treating these as sob stories, Alvaro frames them as training sessions for character.

He explains how choosing the uncomfortable option became his rule of thumb: “I’ve never seen growth in myself when I chose comfort.” From there, you’ll hear how he shifted into marketing, then into luxury villa rentals in the Caribbean by literally knocking on doors and asking absent owners if they’d rent their homes.

When a work visa fell through and later COVID hit, Alvaro pivoted again, turning rentals into sales and building a real estate brand using celebrity stays and what he calls “celebritizing homes”. The rawest moment comes when he returns to the US on an investor visa and finds his fiancée with someone else. His response? Google “toughest challenges in the world” through tears and sign up for a full Ironman as his first race.

This chat is aimed at anyone staring down their own “giants” – addiction, loss, financial worry or simply feeling stuck – and wondering if they’ve got another fight left in them. As Alvaro puts it, “All you need is all you have to get started.” What giant in your life is asking you to choose courage over comfort today?
