What Really Works? Michael Walsh on Addiction Treatment Strategies
“If you can immerse yourself with a group of people in a sober living and learn how to, like I said earlier, go through death and job rejection and relationship stuff and all the stuff we need to handle, without running into a drink or a drug, having those training wheels, if you will, of a sober living environment, and then not only learning how to deal with that stuff, but learning how to have fun- I don't know if you remember. I really truly believe that people aren't having fun in recovery.”
When it comes to addiction treatment, one size definitely does not fit all. In this episode of 'I Love Being Sober', host Tim Westbrook sits down with Michael Walsh, a seasoned addiction professional with over two decades of experience. Michael has worn many hats in his career, from being the President and CEO of the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers to serving as an expert witness on addictive disorders.
With such a diverse background, he brings a wealth of knowledge to the table about what really works in addiction treatment. They dive into various treatment methods, discussing everything from medication-assisted treatments to the importance of sober living environments. One of the standout moments is when Walsh talks about the crucial role of trauma-focused therapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT).
He emphasizes that understanding and addressing trauma can be a game-changer for many on their recovery journey. The episode also tackles the challenge of finding reliable information about addiction treatment. With so much misinformation out there, it's easy to get lost. Walsh and Westbrook stress the importance of doing your homework and seeking out licensed professionals who can provide the right guidance.
They also touch on the importance of fun in recovery, arguing that sobriety shouldn't just be about avoiding substances but also about learning to enjoy life again. This episode is a treasure trove of insights for anyone looking to understand the complexities of addiction treatment and find the best path to long-term recovery.
