Katrina Clarke's Sobriety Journey: Unpacking Her Upbringing

People are out there that love you and care about you, and not everyone knows how to deal with it. And I know a lot of the times that people turn to drugs and alcohol because of mental issues such as depression, bipolar personality disorder, all these other things, because you're self-medicating, which is what I was doing.

Growing up, Katrina Clarke faced a unique blend of challenges and opportunities that would later shape her relationship with alcohol. In this heartfelt episode of 'Sober Life = Happy Life', Katrina opens up about her childhood, sharing how her mother's determination for her to receive a good education was both a blessing and a source of confusion.

Despite the diversity of her school, there was a glaring lack of guidance on what it meant to be an African-American woman, leaving Katrina to navigate her identity largely on her own. As she ventured into her early twenties, Katrina turned to alcohol as a way to cope with life's pressures. What started as occasional drinking soon became a dangerous form of self-medication.

She candidly discusses the moment she realized the depth of her dependency and the steps she took to reclaim her life. Medication provided temporary relief, but it was through joining Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and discovering her higher power that Katrina found lasting sobriety. Katrina's story is not just about her struggles; it's a powerful testament to the importance of seeking help and finding a supportive community.

She emphasizes how AA and the concept of a higher power played crucial roles in her recovery. For anyone grappling with addiction or supporting someone who is, Katrina's journey offers both hope and practical advice.
