Walking Back to Happiness: Nigel Jones on Sobriety, Identity and 9km by 9am
Episode Overview

- Create a strong daily routine, such as morning walks, to support sobriety and boost wellbeing.
- Feed your mind with books, podcasts and ideas that challenge old beliefs about alcohol.
- Use your “inner librarian” wisely by asking better questions and focusing on alcohol-free success.
- Avoid framing sobriety as “giving up”; view it as stopping something harmful and choosing joy instead.
“Alcohol is not the gateway to joy. Actual joy needs a curiosity, a courage, a willingness to be who you are.”
How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This conversation between Janey Lee Grace and guest Nigel Jones offers a down-to-earth look at how changing identity and early morning walks helped one long-term drinker reclaim his life. Nigel shares how his “drinking career” stretched over 35 years, with the longest break being just six days. Working in PR and advertising, he describes a culture where drinking was almost mandatory to fit in and get ahead.
Yet underneath the polished exterior, he says, “It is a prison. There’s no other word for it. You are like, you’re locking yourself up.” His turning point came in late 2020, approaching his mid‑50s and fearing he wouldn’t reach 60 if he carried on.
Instead of seeing himself as “a drinker trying to become a non‑drinker”, Nigel flipped the script and chose to be “a non‑drinker becoming a non‑drinker”, putting himself mentally at the top of the mountain from day one. That mindset shift, paired with practical tools, became his foundation. On day two alcohol-free, he set a bold target: 15,000 steps every morning, roughly nine kilometres by 9am.
Those daily walks, through lanes and forests, grew into a health and wellbeing platform and his book *Walking Back to Happiness – The Secret to Alcohol-Free Living and Wellbeing*. Walking gave him space to absorb quit lit, podcasts, and philosophies about belief change. One idea he loves is treating the mind like a library, with an “inner librarian” who pulls out different ‘books’ depending on the thoughts and questions you feed it.
Janey adds her own perspective too, refusing phrases like “giving up” and insisting, “Alcohol is not the gateway to joy. Actual joy needs a curiosity, a courage, a willingness to be who you are.” Together, they show how sobriety, movement and mindset can combine into a surprisingly joyful life. If you’re wondering whether a simple daily habit could be your path to feeling truly free, this episode might spark your next step.
