Finding Your True Self When Life Completely Falls Apart
Episode Overview
- Many people mislabel their struggles as marketing or addiction problems when the deeper issue is identity.
- True leadership flows from self-awareness and a willingness to face uncomfortable emotions and patterns.
- Trying to live from a false persona can bring short-term success but often leads to burnout, emptiness and collapse.
- Loss, grief and hitting an emotional or spiritual wall can become a turning point for reconnecting with faith and a truer self.
- Doing the “messy” inner work—questioning motives, facing fear and sitting in silence—is key to long-term recovery and healthier relationships.
“Don’t be afraid of the messy parts because it’s going to get messy… your choices are to sit in the silence or feel like a part of you is missing for the rest of your life.”
Curious about how others turn their lives around after addiction and loss? This conversation between host Jodie Stevens and guest Samantha Norman leans right into that question, blending recovery, faith, leadership and identity in a way that feels both honest and practical.
Samantha, creator of the “Who Before What” framework, talks about why she believes “most people don’t have a marketing problem, they have an identity problem.” She explains how her work helps coaches, business owners and leaders strip things back to the basics: Who are you? What do you value? What do you want to be remembered for?
From there, she helps people shape their messaging, visuals and content so they’re actually aligned with who they are, not who they’re pretending to be. She shares candidly how she once built a very successful fitness coaching business around a persona that “just doesn’t sound anything like you,” as an old acquaintance bluntly told her.
Sitting in a nearly empty house, she finally picked up a notepad and wrote to God: “I’m still really mad at you, but this is what’s happening… I can’t do it without you.” From there, the episode looks at how identity work overlaps with recovery: people pleasing, codependency, control, imposter syndrome and that fear of “being seen looking stupid.” Jodie connects this to sobriety, pointing out that many in recovery realise, “I don’t have an addiction problem, I have an identity problem.” If you’re rebuilding after addiction, grief, burnout or a big life change, you’ll hear a lot that might sound uncomfortably familiar—but also deeply reassuring.
That false identity, combined with a series of devastating losses—her job, her marriage, her home, and her mum—forced her into what she and Jodie describe as a kind of spiritual and emotional collapse. It might leave you asking: who are you, really, when everything falls apart?
