From Sobriety to Freedom: Michael Cusick on Desire, Porn and Christ-Centred Recovery

Episode Overview

  • Addiction is described as a disconnection from what a person most deeply wants, not just a series of bad choices.
  • Sexual sin and pornography are framed as attempts to meet good, God-given needs for connection, comfort and affirmation in counterfeit ways.
  • Real change is linked to retraining desires and seeking freedom in Christ, rather than relying on willpower and behaviour control alone.
  • Safe groups and accountability provide spaces where people can be honest, experience acceptance and begin to heal shame.
  • Attachment patterns and early experiences of being seen, soothed, safe and secure strongly influence how a person relates to God and others in recovery.
Freedom that you have in Christ, freedom that you have in your life, doesn't come from controlling your behavior, but by retraining your desires.

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol, porn, or drugs, yet still feel empty? Real Recovery tackles that head-on as hosts Bill Arnold and George P. Fraser sit down with therapist, author, and long-time friend of the show, Michael John Cusick. This conversation is aimed squarely at people wrestling with addiction—especially sexual sin and pornography—as well as those in Christian recovery who sense that “getting sober” hasn’t fully dealt with what’s going on inside.

The tone stays light and bantery at times (there are jokes about surf music, Elroy from The Jetsons, and even brothel doorbells), but the content gets very raw and honest. Michael explains why, in his words, “every addiction is about, at some level, a disconnection from what we most deeply want.” Drawing on his books *Surfing for God* and *Sacred Attachment*, he talks about lust as “a misdirected desire” rooted in God-given longings for connection, comfort, intimacy and affirmation.

Instead of just white-knuckling temptation, he argues for “retraining your desires” and shifting from simple sobriety to genuine freedom. He shares parts of his own story, including childhood sexual abuse, porn and sex addiction, and alcohol use, and how recovery—and a relationship with Jesus—changed not just his behaviour but his sense of identity and security.

Attachment theory, brain chemistry, 12-step wisdom and Bible passages all show up as he outlines how safe community lets people be “seen, soothed, safe and secure” rather than trapped in secret shame. If you or someone you love is stuck in porn, sex, alcohol or drug addiction and tired of trying harder on willpower alone, this conversation points to honesty, community, and Christ-centred recovery as a very different way forward.

What might change for you if, instead of just stopping the behaviour, you started asking what your heart is really looking for?
