Jamie Leibert on Purpose, Relapse and Learning to Dream Beyond Survival

Episode Overview

  • Staying sober is harder in toxic environments, so changing surroundings can be a crucial part of recovery.
  • Purpose and athletic goals can help redirect addictive energy, but they don’t "cure" addiction on their own.
  • A supportive, like-minded partner or network can make daily habit changes more sustainable.
  • Finding a new dream starts with asking what excites you, listing obstacles, making a plan and sticking to it consistently.
  • Shifting from survival to living involves honest self-evaluation, building skills, and being willing to change uncomfortable truths.
You can't dream when you're surviving. You have to figure out how to stop surviving and start living.

How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This conversation with athlete and adventurer Jamie Leibert takes you into the messy, honest middle of addiction, relapse and trying to stay clean while chasing big dreams.

Jamie talks openly about making it almost three full years on parole before a birthday binge of molly and cocaine in a Texas strip club, joking that his "pee was this clear" and the officer "would fail you if you weren't getting off" parole. That close call became a turning point, but the story didn’t suddenly become neat and tidy.

For nearly a decade, Jamie shifted between running businesses and a nonprofit for foster kids during the week and "losing my mind" at skydiving parties, where heavy drug use and drinking were the norm. He’s blunt about his limitations: "I can't be sober and in a toxic environment. I'm not that strong.

I never will be." So he describes building his life around boundaries – living in a van, travelling, setting "scoreboards" and huge goals – and accepting that he’s still trying to figure out who he is at 44. A big thread through the chat is the role of love and partnership.

Jamie credits his wife as a crucial part of his support network, saying, "If she's healthy, I'm healthy" and sharing how they sync their habits around food, fitness and work. Her decision to learn base jumping so they could tackle a dangerous expedition together is framed as "the power of love" that helps him stay focused.

For anyone wondering how to find something stronger than the pull of drugs, Jamie lays out his own five-step idea: ask what excites you, list the obstacles, make a concrete plan, execute it "religiously" and keep going until survival slowly turns into living. As he puts it, "You can't dream when you're surviving." If you're juggling sobriety, stress and big questions about purpose, could it be time to start planning that dream, one honest step at a time?
