Joe C: Six Decades Sober and Why There’s No One Right Way
Episode Overview
- There is no single best pathway to recovery; AA, SMART, LifeRing, Dharma and others can all help people get sober.
- Connection, hope, identity and meaning (CHIME) appear as common foundations for lasting recovery across different approaches.
- Online and Zoom meetings have opened access for many, especially during the pandemic, and are likely to remain a major part of recovery culture.
- Saying “yes” to many different meetings and styles can help you work out what genuinely supports your sobriety.
- Recovery benefits from a balance of structure and spontaneity; too much rigidity or too much chaos can both be risky.
“There’s no one way. There’s no the way. There’s no the there.”
What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? In this conversation on Recovery Survey, long-time sober writer and broadcaster Joe C shares how six decades in recovery have shaped his view that there’s no single “right” way to get well. Joe talks candidly about getting sober as a teenager in the 1970s, describing his early AA experience as deeply unappealing: sobriety felt like punishment, while his chaotic rock and roll lifestyle still seemed more romantic.
Ironically, he says he really committed to sobriety only when trying to help his cousin: modelling recovery for her pulled him into a community that ultimately kept him alive. Across the years, Joe has become fascinated by why different approaches to recovery work.
He references research by David Best and the CHIME model – **Connection, Hope, Identity, Meaning** – and argues that these elements show up whether someone finds help in AA, SMART Recovery, Dharma/Refuge, LifeRing, church, or on their own. As Joe puts it, “There’s no one way. There’s no the way. There’s no the there.” The chat also looks at how recovery culture has shifted.
Joe calls this “a better era for recovery than I have ever seen”, pointing to the explosion of meetings and support options, especially online. From Zoom groups across the globe to virtual communities that work better for introverts or overworked parents, he stresses the value of saying “yes to everything” until you find what fits.
Joe also shares the story behind his book *Beyond Belief: Agnostic Musings for 12 Step Life* and his secular AA involvement, born from boredom with rigid, book-heavy meetings and his need for practical, non-supernatural language. If you’ve ever felt like you don’t quite fit the standard recovery mould, this conversation might leave you asking: what mix of connection, hope, and community could work for you?
