What drives someone to seek a life that feels truly real? This conversation follows Ray Crist’s dramatic shift from high-pressure fashion photographer to modern shaman and teacher after a stage 4 kidney cancer diagnosis at 39. Ray shares how a life packed with Vogue covers and big advertising campaigns came at a cost: relentless schedules, stress and burnout.
When doctors gave him around three months to live, he describes it as “the first day of my life and the last day of that life”, triggering deep grief but also a complete reset of his priorities.
You’ll hear how a night meditating at the oracle of Delphi led to an inner message – “He who travels heals or dies learned” – and pushed him to literally change his address, leave Greece and begin searching for shamans in Mexico and Peru. Alongside surgery and medical care, Ray commits to being an active participant in his healing, not just a passive patient. Two key encounters with shamans become turning points.
One teacher tells him, “I can’t heal you, but I can train you to become a shaman and you can heal yourself,” shifting him from feeling like a victim to taking responsibility for his body and choices. Another, in the Amazon jungle, snaps him out of despair with blunt “tough love”, then guides him through plant work, rituals and terrifying but transformative solo nights in the trees.
Ray now runs a school of modern shamanism based on three archetypes – serpent (letting go of the past), jaguar (living without paralysing fear) and condor (rising above old patterns). The conversation is warm, honest and surprisingly humorous, aimed at anyone curious about healing, spiritual practice, authenticity and what it means to truly engage with life. It might leave you asking: where in your own life could you stop handing away your power and start getting real?
