His drinking was always intense, but the town and the friends he grew up with normalized the behavior. It wasn’t until he got to college that he realized not everyone drank the way he and his friends did. Dean’s drinking really spiraled out of control as he moved away from home. By his mid 30s he was drinking all day and blacking out several times a day. The consequences began catching up to him. He gave up custody of his children and his house. His job was in peril and his doctor told him he would be dead in 9 months if he continued down the road he was on.
