Healing, Teen Sobriety and the ‘Trash Can’ of Trauma with Tracy Viola

Episode Overview

  • Sobriety can stick even after a failed first rehab if someone becomes truly willing to try a different way.
  • Thinking of trauma as a trash can without a lid helps explain why removing substances can suddenly bring buried pain to the surface.
  • Separating fault from responsibility allows people to accept hurtful family histories while choosing healthier responses in the present.
  • Simple practices like “make the next right decision” and taking a yellow‑light pause can give teens practical tools for safer choices.
  • Service, movement, honest communication and quick amends help sustain long‑term recovery and healthier family relationships.
Make the next right decision. I call it being a NERD – N-E-R-D, Next Right Decision.

How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This conversation with author and long‑time recoveree Tracy Viola gives a raw yet hopeful look at what it can mean to rebuild a life after addiction and assault. Speaking with host Arlina Allen, Tracy talks about getting sober at 19 after a childhood marked by her parents’ divorce, an abusive stepfather and an absent alcoholic father.

Her addiction was short but ferocious; she describes herself as a “true addict through and through,” using most substances regularly and ending up homeless when her first attempt at rehab failed. It was in a second programme, and under the blunt honesty of a counsellor who literally grabbed her shoulders and shouted that she was going to die, that she had the “white light” moment that pushed her into genuine surrender.

Tracy shares the “trash can” metaphor she uses for trauma: drugs and alcohol acted like a lid that kept the pain hidden, but once the lid came off, she had to face what was inside. That included a college sexual assault during the infamous campus “red zone” and layers of family hurt. Over time, she learned to separate “fault from responsibility”, making peace with her father by accepting he simply didn’t know how to love in the way she needed.

You’ll hear about her favourite mantra, “make the next right decision”, which she packages for teens as “be a NERD (Next Right Decision)”, plus her yellow‑light approach to risk: she won’t say a flat yes or no to teens about substances, but asks them to pause and ask whether a choice brings them closer to or further from what they want.

With humour, honesty and plenty of practical language, this episode speaks strongly to anyone early in recovery, parents of teens, and those healing from trauma. If you’ve ever wondered whether life can really get better after hitting bottom, this story might be the nudge you need to keep going one day at a time.
