"Fuck drinking and carry on smartly."

How do people cope with the challenges of staying sober? Australian comedian David Boyle answers that in his own very Boyle way, mixing seven-plus years of sobriety with chaos, family life and listener confessions. Recorded as he hits "7 years 42 days sober", Boyle chats about planning a surprise 10th birthday for his son, juggling school, football mania and ridiculous stadium costs.

From $320 train fares to $18 beers at the baseball, he skewers how expensive it is to have fun – and how wild it used to be when alcohol was part of the equation. Then it’s time for "Fucked Up Friday", where long-time listener Timmy from the United States shares a teenage booze story.

At 15, with a fresh learner’s permit and a mum who bought the booze, Timmy and his mates go on a rain-soaked chaos mission in an '89 Mazda – burnouts, e-brake slides, reverse donuts and "100 miles an hour spins on aircraft property". Eventually they bog the car in a rice field and spot a dump truck with the keys effectively in it: "We took a step back while the truck idled, asking us to borrow it.

And well, we didn't take it, just kidding. We fucking borrowed that shit..." The chaos ends with around 20 cops closing in, jail time and a pretty blunt summary from Tim: "Fuck drinking and carry on smartly." Boyle, ever the comedian, ribs him for skimming over the arrest details and demands a part two.

This bite-sized episode suits anyone who likes their recovery stories raw, sweary and funny, with zero preachiness and plenty of honesty about how messy drinking used to be. If you’re sober, sober-curious, or just trying to laugh at your own past carnage, you’ll probably recognise a bit of yourself in Timmy’s story and Boyle’s commentary. So, what old drinking tale would you send in for a future Fucked Up Friday?
