Healing from the Past: Tackling Childhood Trauma in Native Communities

When you shut off the grief and anger and sadness, you also shut off happiness and love. It festers inside of us almost like an infection.

Imagine feeling like you're losing your mind, only to discover that your childhood experiences have shaped your entire outlook on life. This episode of 'A Mile in My Moccasins' dives into the raw and often painful topic of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) through the eyes of Kayla, Jeep, and Susan. Kayla had always struggled with anxiety and depression, but it wasn’t until a seminar led by Susan Beaulieu that she understood how her rough childhood had wired her brain.

This realization was a game-changer for her, yet the old feelings still creep up at the worst times. How does she keep them at bay? Jeep stumbled upon the concept of ACEs by accident. Visiting an old friend, he found himself in a room full of women discussing childhood trauma. Taking the ACEs assessment flipped a switch in his mind. He realized the toll his early traumas had taken and committed to breaking the cycle for his grandchildren.

But how can he be sure he's not passing down the same issues? Through candid conversations, this episode sheds light on how these early experiences affect not just individuals but entire communities. The trio acknowledges that while dissociation was a common coping mechanism, it also numbed positive emotions. They encourage listeners to recognize and shift these old patterns, aiming for a balanced life filled with genuine emotional experiences.

If you’re grappling with your own past or supporting someone who is, this episode offers a blend of personal stories and actionable advice. It’s a reminder that healing is a journey we all get to navigate in our own time.
