Amy LeClair's Journey: From Gymnastics Glory to Recovery Advocate
If you can learn the skills, the tools, get the treatment, get the help, you're not getting better in spite of what happened to you.
What happens when a young athlete’s dream becomes a nightmare? Amy LeClair, a former Junior Olympic gymnast, knows this all too well. From the age of 11, Amy battled Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), which first struck her during a school trip. Despite the intrusive thoughts, she managed to find coping mechanisms that kept her going. But college brought new challenges.
As a Division 1 gymnast at San Jose State, Amy faced severe verbal and emotional abuse from her coaches and was sexually assaulted by her head trainer. These traumatic experiences buried deep within her manifested as anxiety, leading to an addiction to Ativan, even during her pregnancy. Amy hit rock bottom just before giving birth, landing in the hospital on a psychiatric hold. But this was not the end of her story.
Seeking help through an Intensive Outpatient Program and an OCD recovery program, Amy found the tools she needed to heal. She later participated in an FBI investigation into San Jose State and took legal action against her abusers. In this episode of 'The Courage to Change: A Recovery Podcast', Amy opens up about her journey from the pressures of competitive gymnastics to becoming a voice for survivors of abuse.
Her story is a testament to resilience and the power of seeking help. Tune in to hear Amy’s inspiring tale and join a community dedicated to recovery and change.
