Ryan Dusick: From Maroon 5 Drummer to Mental Health Advocate
It took me a long time to get to the place that I am now, where I look at it as something that I'm very proud of from my past, something that I worked really hard at with some really great friends of mine.
Ever wondered what happens when a rockstar's dream comes crashing down? Ryan Dusick, the founding drummer of Maroon 5, knows this story all too well. In this episode of 'The Courage to Change: A Recovery Podcast', Ryan opens up about his journey from the heights of musical fame to the depths of addiction and back again. Growing up, Ryan had dreams of becoming a professional baseball player, but arm injuries led him to channel his passion into music.
Forming Kara’s Flowers with high school friends, which later became the world-famous Maroon 5, Ryan enjoyed years of success, including Grammy wins and millions of albums sold. However, the physical and mental toll of performing eventually forced him to leave the band. Struggling with depression and a lost sense of identity, Ryan turned to alcohol, leading to years of addiction battles. It wasn't until 2016 that he found sobriety and began to rebuild his life.
Now, Ryan works in mental health, promoting mindfulness and radical acceptance as tools for recovery. He also discusses his new book, 'Harder to Breathe', which details his journey and aims to inspire others facing similar struggles. Tune in to hear Ryan's candid reflections on fame, failure, and finding a new purpose.
