Brad Thomas-Year: From Ranger to Delta Force and Beyond
There is only one thing to do, and that's survive. Absolutely anybody roll over and quit.
Imagine going from a fresh recruit to a seasoned Delta Force Operator. That's the incredible journey of Brad Thomas-Year, who first entered the military in November 1990. Starting with an Option 40 Ranger Contract, Brad navigated basic training, AIT Infantry training, Airborne School, and the Ranger Indoctrination Program by April 1991. His commitment and skill soon earned him a spot in B Company 3rd Ranger Battalion at Ft. Benning, Georgia.
Fast forward to August 1993, and Brad was deployed to Mogadishu, Somalia, as part of Task Force Ranger. If you've seen 'Blackhawk Down', you’ve witnessed a glimpse of what Brad experienced during his seven combat operations there. He was one of the few NCOs to survive that harrowing engagement, and his leadership qualities quickly propelled him into a mentoring role within his platoon. But Brad's story doesn't stop there.
In May 1995, he took on the rigorous selection for the Regimental Recon Detachment in the 75th Ranger Regiment. By 1998, he was the sole representative from his regiment deployed to Bosnia and Herzegovina to support operations against Persons Indicted for War Crimes (PIFWCS). However, military glory came with its own set of challenges. Brad opens up about his struggles with addiction and PTSD, shedding light on the often-hidden battles veterans face after service.
Beyond the battlefield, Brad has found solace and purpose in music and community events, believing in their power to unite people. His passion for helping fellow veterans led him to establish The Guardians Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to providing essential resources for veterans in need. Tune into this episode of 'The Allen Steele Show' to hear Brad's full story—a tale of resilience, leadership, and unwavering dedication to both his country and his fellow soldiers.
