From Trauma to Community: Marta Salcedo on Remembrance Mexico

Episode Overview

  • Healing from trauma can start with honest truth-telling and ongoing therapy rather than instant fixes.
  • Body-based practices like dance, movement and breath can support emotional recovery and long-term resilience.
  • Retreats such as Remembrance Mexico offer community, ritual and shared processes that ease loneliness and isolation.
  • Clear group agreements and personal responsibility help create safer spaces for intense emotional work.
  • Forgiveness and self-forgiveness are gradual practices that can shift a victim narrative into one of conscious choice and growth.
““La medicina es la comunidad, la medicina es el no sentirte solo, la medicina es el de decir ‘estoy roto’ y que alguien te recibe decir ‘yo también’.””

How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety and healing after deep family trauma? This conversation between host Gris Alves and guest Marta Salcedo offers a raw and very human look at that question. Marta shares how her life changed at 17, when her mother finally told her the truth about her father’s suicide attempt in their family dining room. The shock, anger and confusion pushed her into a deep depression and even thoughts of her own death.

Therapy in Barcelona, especially Gestalt work, helped her move from rage to a fierce compassion: for her father, her mother and herself. From there, Marta followed what made her feel alive: contemporary dance in London, then movement coaching, bodywork and eventually trauma-informed facilitation. She speaks honestly about turning her pain into “alquimia”, step by step, through years of therapy, forgiveness and community work, rather than any overnight miracle.

Much of the conversation centres on Remembrance Mexico, a multi-generational retreat connected with Sacred Sons. Gris and Marta describe it as a kind of “summer camp” for adults and families: circles of men and women, altars, song, dance, group processes, and space for grief and joy. For anyone dealing with addiction, mental health struggles or heavy family history, the retreat is framed as a chance to feel held by community instead of facing everything alone.

They talk about trauma-informed practice, family constellations, women’s circles and the importance of clear group agreements and responsibility: everyone bringing their own “mochilita” and choosing how deep they go. Marta sums it up beautifully: healing happens in connection, and sometimes just sitting by the fire and watching someone else’s process can start your own.

If you’ve ever wished for a place where you can cry, laugh, remember your dead and still feel light enough to dance, this conversation might spark something in you.
