Grief & Rage Rave: Dancing Sober Through Ancestral Healing

Episode Overview

  • Humans have long used altered states, drumming and dancing to connect with their deeper essence and ancestral wisdom.
  • Trauma is framed as a wound that often leads to disconnection from the body, yet this is described as the body’s intelligent way of protecting itself.
  • A sober Grief & Rage Rave offers structured movement, drumming and integration as a way to safely feel and express grief and rage without alcohol.
  • Group settings are highlighted as powerful because they show people they are not alone in their grief and emotional struggles.
  • Trauma-informed healing is presented as understanding what is happening inside oneself and meeting it with compassion rather than self-judgement.
“We’re not broken. We’re just wounded.”

Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey? This episode of Tales of Recovery drops you straight into Gris Alves’s post-retreat reflections, fresh from ceremonies in Malinalco, Mexico and the Jacumba mountains, and back into her everyday life “with my family and my animals”.

She talks about how humans have always sought altered states of consciousness – through psilocybin, drumming, dancing around the fire – as a way to ask, “What the heck am I doing on this planet?” Gris links ancestral practices with modern trauma understanding, explaining how “trauma is just a wound” and how, to survive, many people disconnect from their bodies.

She stresses that this disconnection is actually “the intelligence of our body” at work, but that stuck emotions eventually need safe ways to move. That frame leads into her newest offering: a sober Grief & Rage Rave on 5 December at the Polish Pigeon. With DJ KURTYKA on the decks, Dr. Virgil Sim involved, and adaptogenic drinks instead of alcohol, the night mixes village-style dancing, stomping and drumming with a clear therapeutic structure.

Gris explains, “We’re going to bring the energy up, then bring the energy down, ground it… and then do integration,” so people can feel big emotions and still “bring it back in and keep on walking”. Alongside the dance floor, there’ll be a drumming station for working with rage, an integration room, small tarot readings by Lunita, and herbal teas by Nazira’s Remedies.

Gris highlights the power of healing in groups, reminding anyone who feels alone in their grief that “you’re not the only one that has grief. Grief is a part of being in this experience.” If you’ve ever wished for a space to move grief and anger out of your body without booze, blame or judgement, this episode might nudge you to ask: what could change if you gave your body four hours to dance, drum, breathe and feel?
