Jesse’s Story: From Daily Drinking to Enjoying Life Again
Episode Overview
- Alcohol can quietly shift from social activity to daily dependence, much like a frog in slowly boiling water.
- Honesty with trusted people, including doctors and family, is a crucial step towards meaningful help.
- Detox is more than “getting clean”; rest, food and time to clear brain fog prepare you to actually benefit from therapy.
- Group and one-to-one sessions that focus on how you relate to your thoughts can reduce the urge to use alcohol to shut your mind down.
- Ongoing support meetings, family groups and a focus on everyday enjoyment make long-term sobriety feel both possible and worthwhile.
“My default was just go drink, just go drink and shut your brain down… and then you'll be okay for a little bit.”
What are the common struggles and victories in addiction recovery? This conversation between Anne and Jesse gives a detailed look at how an ordinary, "functioning" drinker ends up in crisis, and what turning things around actually looks like in day-to-day life. Jesse talks about his first drink at age 10 or 11, when his older brother handed him screwdrivers at his granddad’s house.
The night ended in what he thinks was alcohol poisoning and a vow of "I'll never do that again." Fast forward to college, a new social world, and a favourite pub that became his "third home." Alcohol slowly moved from weekend fun to constant background noise, like "the frog in a slowly boiling pot of water" he references more than once.
By 2017, Jesse was drinking at work as an investigator to blunt anxiety from adversarial interactions, convincing himself he was just "medicating throughout the day." Acute pancreatitis in 2022, failed attempts to stay sober, AA, medication, and a blunt warning from his wife – "we both know when you drink like this, you're killing yourself" – eventually led him to Gulf Breeze Recovery.
Jesse walks through detox ("mostly just sleeping, resting, eating"), journaling for the first time, and group and individual therapy focused on the three principles of mind, thought and consciousness. He shares how learning to be honest with trusted people, and to sit with his thoughts instead of shutting them down with alcohol, changed his relationship with anxiety and boredom.
He also talks about nutrition, recreational therapy, ongoing Zoom support, and family involvement, all framed by his simple verdict on the programme: "it works if you work with it." Now taking flight lessons, volunteering, and enjoying his job more, he sums up sobriety as "just enjoying every day of my life". If you’ve ever wondered whether structured support and a fresh way of seeing your thinking could help, Jesse’s story might be the nudge you’ve been waiting for.
