Greg’s Story: From Therapist to Patient and Back to Hope

Episode Overview

  • Alcohol use can escalate quickly in the context of illness, isolation and boredom, leading to severe physical dependence.
  • Hospital detox may stop immediate withdrawal, but lasting recovery needs committed therapeutic work and new ways of thinking.
  • Focusing on the present moment and choosing which thoughts to feed can reduce cravings and emotional distress.
  • Reading and repeatedly reflecting on recovery-focused books can help embed new perspectives and practical tools.
  • Aftercare and ongoing group support give space to test what was learned in treatment and adjust strategies over time.
“You know, I've always said I did not have a drinking problem. I could drink all day long. I had a problem not drinking.”

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol? Greg’s story might resonate more than you expect. After 45 years working in mental health, running inpatient and outpatient addiction programmes and psychiatric hospitals, he thought he understood addiction from the outside. Then COVID, a stroke, and being homebound on oxygen changed everything. Lonely and staring at "four walls all the time", Greg began drinking out of boredom, which quickly turned into drinking out of necessity.

Within a year and a half he was, in his words, "severely physically addicted to alcohol", facing terrifying withdrawals, hallucinations, and repeated hospital detoxes that never led to lasting change. He jokes, "I’ve always said I did not have a drinking problem. I could drink all day long. I had a problem not drinking." This conversation walks through how Gulf Breeze Recovery became, as he puts it, "a lifesaver situation".

Greg explains why he told his family, "Don’t expect to hear from me for two months" so he could fully commit to treatment, and how the programme’s focus on thought, attention, and the present moment helped him reconnect with what he calls "heart knowledge" and a calmer mind.

You’ll hear about detox, neurofeedback, group therapy, one-to-one sessions, and surprisingly meaningful recreational activities, from crafts and bracelets that remind him "never out of the fight" to simple outings that proved sobriety can include real fun. He also talks passionately about reading, studying authors like Joe Bailey and Eckhart Tolle, and using repetition and note-taking to make new understanding stick.

Now 72, living alone on his farm and engaged in intensive aftercare, Greg shares practical ideas on handling thoughts, avoiding "tomorrow" promises, and making recovery a daily priority. If you’ve ever wondered whether change is possible after years of struggle, his message is clear: "You can do it" – so what decision are you ready to make today?
