Grounded by Earth: Apana, Breath and the Power of Your Feet
Episode Overview
- Use standing tadasana and awareness of the feet to connect with the meeting point between body and earth.
- Scan the body from the soles of the feet to the crown of the head and into the space above to sense vertical wholeness.
- Visualise awareness travelling down through the feet into soil, clay, bedrock and the molten centre of the earth.
- Breathe as if inhaling up through the feet and exhaling back down into the earth to feel grounded and supported.
- Gently reorient to the room and body sensations to return to daily life with a softer, more spacious awareness.
“"There is perhaps a sense of being breathed, by the earth herself."”
How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? For some, it’s through grounding practices that bring them back into their bodies, one breath and one step at a time. This session from the Yoga by Nature Podcast offers a steadying earth meditation focused on apana – the downward-moving current of prana – and the simple magic of standing on your own two feet.
Guided by yoga teacher Morven Hamilton, you’re taken into tadasana and asked to notice the “plane where the feet meet the earth”, with no pressure to feel anything special, just curiosity. From there, she leads a slow body scan from the soles of the feet up to the crown of the head, then beyond, into the space above, before travelling back down through the body and deep into the earth – “through soil, through clay, through bedrock, through molten lava”.
The meditation treats the earth as “a living, organic being, with her own life, her own rhythms”, inviting you to sense your body as part of that same fabric, “made of minerals, precious gems, water, earth, fire, and air, and ether”. Breath becomes a bridge: inhaling up through the feet, exhaling back down, until there is “a sense of being breathed, by the earth herself”.
The style is gentle, spacious and descriptive, with plenty of time to feel rather than think. There’s no complex yoga jargon, just clear, grounding imagery that anyone can follow – whether you’re brand new to meditation or a teacher dipping into the Teachers’ Circle material. If you’re looking for a practice that helps you feel less in your head and more supported by something bigger beneath your feet, this earth meditation might be a good place to stand.
How might it feel to let the earth “welcome you, home through the exhale” today?
