Addiction Unveiled: Dr. Chuck Smith on Science and Stigma

We didn't want them to be neuroanatomists or neurophysiologists, but we did want them to know a few brain parts and a few neurotransmitters so they could understand just how the wheels ran off this thing.

Why do we often misunderstand addiction? Dr. Chuck Smith, an addictionologist with a compelling personal journey, joins Dr. Mei-Li Hennen on this episode of Recovery Plus Podcast to break down the science behind addiction and tackle the pervasive stigma surrounding it. Dr. Smith's story is one of profound transformation. Once a successful physician, he lost everything to substance use disorder but fought his way back through years of recovery, eventually becoming a leading voice in addiction medicine.

His insights are not just theoretical; they come from lived experience and a deep understanding of the shame and guilt that accompany addiction. In their conversation, Dr. Smith and Dr. Hennen delve into the neurobiological mechanisms that drive addiction, making a strong case for treating it as a disease rather than a moral failing. They also highlight the importance of early intervention and effective screening in healthcare settings. One of the standout moments is Dr.

Smith's discussion on how healthcare providers can play a pivotal role in reducing stigma and supporting recovery. By asking the right questions and adopting a compassionate approach, they can make a significant difference in patients' lives. If you're curious about the science of addiction or looking for ways to support someone in recovery, this episode offers valuable insights and practical advice. It's a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding addiction from a scientific and empathetic perspective.
