Finding Light: Leah Siwinski's Battle with PTSD and Recovery

I think the danger in that is that people who are truly truly suffering from the full criteria of PTSD are being lumped into this idea of, well, you're a first responder, we all have PTSD, so you should be fine too.

Imagine dedicating your life to saving others, only to find yourself in need of rescue. That’s the story of Leah Siwinski, a former paramedic with the Chicago Fire Department, who opens up about her harrowing journey through PTSD in this episode of 'Rescue the Rescuer'. Leah’s career began in 2005, driven by a deep calling to help those in crisis. But the job’s relentless stress and a particularly tragic call involving a colleague changed everything for her.

Diagnosed with PTSD in 2014, Leah faced not just the emotional turmoil but also the stigma and lack of support from her department. Her struggles led her to dark places, including thoughts of suicide and severe depression. But Leah’s story doesn’t end there. She fought back, not just for herself but for all first responders battling similar demons.

Now, as the Executive Vice-President of Illinois Firefighter Peer Support, Leah is on a mission to ensure no one has to face these challenges alone. Her candid discussion sheds light on the urgent need for better mental health resources for first responders. Tune in to hear Leah’s inspiring journey from darkness to light and her powerful message about the importance of seeking help and supporting one another.
