"You can add to my life, but you cannot take from my life because you have nothing I need. I'm here to give you love, period."

In his keynote speech at the 13th Annual Southern Ontario Cocaine Anonymous convention, Mark Houston delivered an impactful message about his journey from addiction to recovery. Having been clean and sober since October 19th, 1982, Mark attributes his sobriety to the power of God, despite starting his journey as an atheist. He shared the importance of spirituality and the guidance he received from mentors and sponsors throughout his recovery process.

Mark underscored the significance of building a dependency on God, rather than relying solely on the tangible elements of recovery programs like books or groups. According to him, the core of the recovery journey involves making amends for past harms and continuously engaging with spiritual disciplines. He spoke of his own experiences with the 'dark night of the soul' and the transformative power of the 10th and 11th steps in the Alcoholics Anonymous program.

A critical aspect of Mark's message was the power of meditation and mindfulness. He shared that meditation has been the number one spiritual practice in his life, helping him connect with a higher power and navigate the complexities of sobriety. He encouraged attendees to reflect on their decision-making processes and consider whether their choices were driven by conscious thought or underlying programming. Mark's talk also highlighted the concept of love and connection as central to the recovery process.

He shared that true love has no opposite, and once you begin to give love without expecting anything in return, you realize the profound impact it has on your life and the lives of others. He concluded with a heartfelt message, reminding everyone that their recovery journey is not just for themselves but also for those still suffering from addiction.

Throughout the speech, Mark's genuine passion and dedication to helping others were evident, leaving attendees with a sense of hope and encouragement to continue their own journeys of recovery. His story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience found within the recovery community.
