What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol and drugs after years of chaos? This episode of *Hard Knox Talks: Sober Stories. Real Talk.* follows Mike’s raw account of addiction, prison, homelessness, and the faith that now anchors his recovery. Mike traces his story from early prescriptions and teenage drinking to three DUIs, a near-fatal crash, and a growing dependence on opiates and meth.

He talks about feeling like he never belonged and how substances briefly made him feel comfortable in his own skin. Things spiralled into prison time, attempts to rob a convenience store just to eat, and wandering the streets of Tucson high on meth, convinced a cheap wooden cross from a dollar store kept him safe.

As he says, “She told me she was the devil and I shrugged it off… I felt like I was protected with this little dollar store cross.” Faith and recovery show up in surprising places here: in a prison GED classroom, in kids laughing on the school field behind his tiny flat, and especially in working the 12 steps with a mentor.

Mike describes finally sharing the secrets he’d planned to take to his grave, including childhood sexual abuse, and feeling like someone had cracked open a fizzy drink can inside him – pressure released, shame lifting.

Hearing stories in Alcoholics Anonymous that mirrored his own left him thinking, for the first time, “I belong here.” He also talks about getting sober alongside his now-fiancée, rebuilding from homelessness to home ownership, a career in car sales, and now coaching men on building a life they’re excited to wake up to.

His message is simple and direct: keep getting back up, build structure, chase what truly lights you up, and remember, “If you’re still breathing, there’s still hope.” If you’ve ever wondered whether a life blown apart by addiction can grow into something meaningful, this conversation might be the nudge you need to keep going.
