Pat W's Journey: Triumph Over Tourette's and Addiction

The community of Alcoholics Anonymous saved my life, and being a part of that same community, the thing that I love about Alcoholics Anonymous and the thing that I hate about therapy is that it’s free. You don’t have to pay any money to go, and it’s awesome.

Pat W's story is one of sheer determination and resilience. Growing up in Pasadena, California, Pat faced the dual challenges of living with Tourette's Syndrome and battling substance abuse from a young age. In this episode of 'The Courage to Change: A Recovery Podcast', host Ashley Loeb Blassingame sits down with Pat to unravel his incredible journey from struggling teen to a man who found his true purpose in recovery.

Pat's passion for cycling, running, photography, and books adds layers to his vibrant personality, making his story even more compelling. He opens up about feeling like an outsider due to his condition and the immense impact it had on his self-esteem and choices. A near-death experience served as a turning point for Pat, pushing him towards seeking help and embarking on a path to recovery.

One of the most touching aspects of Pat's journey is his deep connection with the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) community. He credits AA with saving his life and providing the support he needed to stay sober. Pat also candidly discusses the trauma he faced, including a harrowing experience of sexual assault within the AA community, and how he managed to rebuild his coping skills despite such setbacks. Throughout the conversation, Pat's optimism and unwavering spirit shine through.

He offers valuable advice for anyone grappling with addiction or feeling overwhelmed by life's challenges. This episode is a heartfelt reminder of the transformative power of recovery and the crucial role that community support plays in healing. Tune in to hear Pat's inspiring story and find hope in his journey.
