“Stigma is part of the reason that people are often surprised when I disclose my own use of substances many years ago now. Yes, I used ecstasy. But the point is, many people, over 20% of Canadians at some point in their life will meet the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorder. And we need to make sure that wherever folks are on their journey, that they're supported, cared for, and they know that they belong in this community, and that we care, and that we're here to support.”
Imagine facing judgment every time you seek help for substance use. That's the reality many people endure, and it's a key topic in this episode of 'Hard Knox Talks: Sober Stories. Real Talk.'. Host Daniel Unmanageable brings together three insightful speakers to shed light on these pressing issues. Dr. Barb Fornssler from the University of Saskatchewan dives into the harsh impact of stigma in healthcare, emphasizing how it hinders recovery and perpetuates suffering.
Nicole Obrigavitch, Executive Director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Saskatchewan, shares her experiences with addiction and the urgent need for housing solutions in an overpopulated prison system. Finally, Tanner Parrett discusses the power of community relationships in reducing drug-related harms and supporting recovery. These discussions were part of the International Overdose Awareness Day Event 2023 in Saskatoon, SK.
This episode is a heartfelt call to action for compassionate care and community collaboration, offering a beacon of hope for those affected by substance use.
