From Flat Sobriety to Purpose: Lynette Larue on Stopping Drinking and Starting to Live
Episode Overview
- Stopping drinking is only the first step; many people hit a flat, joyless phase as their brain and body recalibrate.
- Old beliefs and victim stories can act like expired items in a fridge, once useful but now keeping you stuck.
- Coaching and daily practice help weaken old thought patterns and build new ones, rather than relying on insight alone.
- Uncertainty and emotional drama often trigger a return to old coping mechanisms, including alcohol, unless addressed directly.
- The Path to Purpose programme is designed for those who are alcohol-free but ready for deeper work to create a meaningful life.
“Because sobriety is the doorway, but your life is the real invitation.”
How do people find strength in their journey to sobriety? This episode from Tribe Sober zooms in on that tricky patch after the booze stops but life still feels flat, foggy and frankly a bit pointless. Head coach Lynette Larue shares her own story of early sobriety, when three months alcohol-free didn’t magically bring joy.
She talks openly about feeling “very flat… physically, mentally, spiritually, I felt blah,” and how learning about anhedonia helped her see that her brain and body were recalibrating rather than permanently broken. From there, the episode shifts into the deeper work that came through coaching. Lynette realises she’d been living from a victim story, stuck with “old beliefs, old patterns, old saboteurs” that were long past their sell-by date.
Using a funny-but-sharp fridge metaphor, she compares these beliefs to expired items cluttering up your head that once made sense but now just hold you back. She shares how tools from coaching, positive intelligence and mindset work helped her move from revolving in the same dramas to what Dr Edith Eger calls evolving.
One of the most striking parts is her honesty about being “a toxic friend” to herself, always complaining and turning every drama into a reason to drink or hide. Lynette explains why she created Path to Purpose for people who’ve stopped drinking but still feel stuck, flat or restless.
The focus is on daily practice, weakening old thought pathways and building new ones, so you can “live from wisdom, not fear… from freedom, not old programming.” If you’ve quit alcohol and now catch yourself thinking, “Is this it?” this episode gently asks whether you’re ready to stop revolving and start evolving. What beliefs might be past their expiry date in your own life?
