Using ACA Tools to Build Healthy Boundaries and a Loving Inner Parent
Episode Overview
- Childhoods marked by chaos, criticism and abuse can leave adults without any clear sense of boundaries or normality.
- Sobriety alone may not address deeper emotional wounds; programmes like ACA can help with underlying patterns such as control, people-pleasing and abandonment.
- Learning to pause, ask for consent before giving feedback and avoiding "fixing" others are practical internal boundary tools.
- Replacing old laundry list thinking with ACA promises supports healthier beliefs and reactions to others and to oneself.
- Developing a loving inner parent and healthy boundaries can gradually bring more peace, inclusion and genuine connection into relationships.
“Slowly but surely, I'm finding healthy responses to my unhealthy behaviour that I learned from the past.”
How do individuals turn their lives around after addiction? This share from the ACA Tuesday Zoombox meeting follows Bill F as he talks about growing up in chaos and learning what healthy boundaries actually look like in adulthood. Bill describes a childhood where, as he puts it, "there was a lot of violence, a lot of trauma, and a lot of chaos" and where boundaries simply did not exist.
As a latchkey kid, the only feedback he got was criticism, and that harsh voice became his inner "critical parent". He also speaks plainly about repeated sexual assaults in childhood and how they distorted his sense of safety and relationships, especially with women. Sobriety through AA helped him stop using alcohol and drugs, but it didn’t touch the deeper wounds.
"AA tells you how to live a sober life," he says, "but it doesn't teach you about boundaries." On the brink of giving up on 12-step programmes altogether, his sponsor handed him the ACA laundry list. Bill recognised himself immediately and found a space where his emotional pain finally made sense. The episode focuses on how Bill is using ACA tools, particularly the Loving Parent Guidebook and Promise Nine, to build internal boundaries.
He shares the practical shifts he’s practising: pausing before trying to fix or control others, asking "do you want me to comment on what you just shared?", and consciously choosing ACA promises over old laundry list thinking.
He talks about catching himself when he wants to judge, instead aiming to "accept them for who they are right now and not for who I want them to be." By the end, Bill reflects that new boundary skills are bringing "peace and serenity" into relationships he never knew how to manage before.
If you’ve ever struggled with people-pleasing, over-control or feeling different even in recovery, this story might leave you asking: what boundaries could help your own inner child feel safer today?
