Darell's Road to Sobriety: Overcoming Night Terrors and PTSD
I think it directly ties into it, because I was drinking a lot of the times so that I would get so drunk that I wouldn't have them, because I, you know it's happening like four or five times a night, and if I could just get blackout drunk, I wouldn't remember him, I wouldn't have him, you know.
What happens when the battles of war follow you home? Darell, a former United States Air Force EOD, knows this all too well. In this episode of Real Recovery Talk, host Tom Conrad and co-host Ben sit down with Darell to discuss his journey from a childhood surrounded by alcohol to grappling with PTSD and night terrors after military service.
Growing up on a New York farm, Darell's early memories are steeped in alcohol, from sipping beer at age five to hosting drinking parties as a teen. His struggle with addiction only deepened during his military service, especially after traumatic experiences in Afghanistan left him battling severe PTSD and night terrors. Drinking became his coping mechanism, eventually leading to his discharge from the Air Force. But that wasn’t the end of Darell’s story.
Hitting rock bottom was a turning point that pushed him towards recovery. He found solace in AA meetings and the Air Force's alcohol and drug prevention program. Through sheer determination and the support of a compassionate community, Darell navigated his way to sobriety. Now, he dedicates his life to helping others on their recovery journeys. This episode is a candid exploration of how Darell turned his life around despite overwhelming odds.
It's a powerful reminder that no matter how dark things may seem, recovery is within reach with the right support.
