Facing Obstacles in Early Sobriety: Fear, Relapse and Finding Growth
Episode Overview
- Obstacles in sobriety are unavoidable and are key opportunities for growth rather than signs of failure.
- Relapse, if someone survives it, should be carefully examined to understand which missing pieces in recovery led up to it.
- Living in constant fear of relapse can lead to an isolated, joyless sobriety that keeps people from genuinely rebuilding their lives.
- Challenges at work, in relationships or daily life can spark creativity and push people towards healthier, more fulfilling choices.
- Taking deliberate risks – such as having difficult conversations or trying new hobbies – helps build confidence and makes sobriety feel alive rather than stale.
“"Sobriety and recovery free from obstacles would offer zero growth."”
What can we learn from those who have battled addiction? In this solo episode of Real Recovery Talk, host Tom Conrad talks straight about something many people in early sobriety would rather avoid: obstacles. Instead of painting sobriety as constant sunshine and gratitude lists, he focuses on the hard bits – relapse, fear, resentment, awkward conversations and feeling stuck in a life that doesn’t quite fit anymore. Tom breaks things into three clear ideas.
First, obstacles are guaranteed, and a recovery journey without them would mean zero growth. As he puts it, "Sobriety and recovery free from obstacles would offer zero growth." Rather than asking, "Why does this keep happening to me?" he suggests flipping it to, "What can I learn by these happening to me?" – especially after a relapse. Second, he compares fear of relapse to the covid lockdowns.
Just like some people stayed inside for months, many newly sober people end up “sheltering in place” emotionally, too scared to golf, bowl or visit favourite restaurants in case it triggers them. That kind of frozen, fear-based sobriety, he argues, "is not sobriety worth having." Third, Tom explains how obstacles can spark creativity.
Hating a job, feeling stuck in relationships or battling a difficult boss can become fuel for change – maybe starting a business, trying a new path or finally stepping into a life that actually fits. He shares light-hearted stories, like his failed attempt at skimboarding and his surprise love for podcasting, to show how trying new hobbies can reshape recovery.
To finish, Tom gives practical challenges: get uncomfortable by having tough conversations or going for that job you feel underqualified for, and try two or three new hobbies that support sobriety. It’s a candid, down-to-earth listen for anyone wondering whether their current approach to sobriety is giving them a life they’re actually excited to live. What obstacle could be your next growth spurt?
