Hungry for More: From Shallow Faith to Deep Transformation with Aminta Geisler
Episode Overview
- Shallow faith can crumble under real-life suffering, but Scripture can rebuild a stronger, deeper trust in God.
- Suffering and rock-bottom moments may become turning points that push people to fully surrender to God.
- Regular, intentional Bible reading and even short fasts can increase spiritual hunger and reshape how someone understands God’s love and goodness.
- Context and background, like the true role of a shepherd in Psalm 23, can make familiar passages come alive and feel deeply personal.
- God’s refining work in areas like patience and kindness is presented as a compassionate invitation to growth, not condemnation.
“The lord is just really so compassionately inviting us into more. It's not a condemnation. It's an invitation.”
How do people find hope in the darkest times? This conversation on Strong Tower Mental Health follows Aminta Geisler’s raw and honest story of moving from what she calls “a mile wide and an inch deep” faith to a life anchored in Scripture and real dependence on God. Heidi Mortenson chats with Aminta, a speaker, author, and self-described “crazy Jesus lady,” about growing up in a loving Christian home yet never really engaging with the Bible.
When her early marriage became toxic and terrifying, Aminta says her shallow faith crumbled. Feeling abandoned by God, she walked away from her faith, chased money, status and unhealthy relationships, and hit rock bottom in a luxury hotel in the Cayman Islands where she feared for her life.
In a desperate prayer, she promised God, “If you will get me home alive to my babies, I will spend the rest of my life telling people about you.” Within 20 minutes, a stranger from Minnesota appeared, got her safely home, and connected her with a Christian counsellor who met with her twice a week for a year. That season, plus fasting and hours in the Bible, led her into seminary and, eventually, into full-time ministry.
Aminta shares how deeper Bible study reshaped her view of God’s goodness, especially through passages like Psalm 23 and the image of the shepherd carrying downcast sheep. She talks about starting a blog, then a non-profit that funds “Breakfast Club” – high school gatherings with free food and short Bible teaching – and her devotional, *More and More: 100 Days of Pursuing God*, written to help people move from “milk” to “meat” in their faith.
Throughout, she stresses that God’s correction is “not a condemnation. It’s an invitation,” and points to the Holy Spirit’s gentle work in areas like patience, gentleness and kindness. If you’re tired of shallow faith and craving something deeper, this conversation might give you language for that hunger – and a nudge to pick up your Bible again.
