“You’re Not Broken”: A Different Way of Seeing Addiction and Recovery

Episode Overview

  • Recovery is framed around innate health and resilience, not a broken or diseased identity.
  • People are seen as guests and reminded "they're not broken", which helps reduce shame and resistance.
  • Staff are trained to maintain their own mental health so they can genuinely "walk the walk" with guests.
  • Detox is handled by a medical team that has lived experience of addiction, aiming for safety and comfort.
  • Aftercare, coaching and extensive reading materials support graduates in staying grounded once they return home.
“"They're not broken. They have everything within themselves to overcome addiction and to live a happy, healthy life."”

Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey? This conversation brings together Gulf Breeze Recovery founder and CEO Barnett Gilmer and psychologist, author, and long-time consultant Joe Bailey to explain why their approach to treatment feels so different for people who have "been to three, five, 15" programmes before.

Barnett shares how six and a half years in a traditional treatment centre left him wanting something new: a place where people could "see for themselves" what had been driving their addiction. After a Three Principles seminar and what he calls a life-changing insight into how his own insecurity had "been driving me all my life", he set out to build a programme focused on helping guests have their own "aha moment" or spiritual awakening.

Joe explains the shift from a disease-based model to what he calls a "health recovery model", where the emphasis is on innate resilience and mental health rather than on labels like alcoholic or addict. One of his central ideas is that "we're one thought away from mental health and one thought away from mental illness", and that people’s experience comes from their thinking in the moment instead of their circumstances.

You’ll hear how Gulf Breeze Recovery treats people as guests, not patients, and why the "health of the helper" matters just as much as the health of the person seeking treatment. Staff are expected to "walk the walk" so guests can feel the difference the moment they walk in the door.

The episode also touches on detox, aftercare, a rich library of recovery books, and the importance of ongoing support so people don’t slip back into old conditioning once they return home. The heartbeat of this conversation is simple but powerful: "they're not broken" and there is always hope. If you’ve ever felt like treatment didn’t fit or that you’re beyond help, this one might give you a new lens on what recovery could look like.
