From Wounds to Wisdom: Justin Michelson on Pain, Nature and Self-Compassion

Episode Overview

  • Turning towards pain, rather than endlessly resisting it, can become the starting point for deeper connection and meaning.
  • Self‑compassion is presented as a practical tool that softens inner tension and supports emotional healing and spiritual growth.
  • Nature is described as a vital teacher that restores a sense of home, family, and purpose that many people feel they have lost.
  • Mindfulness on its own is seen as incomplete; combining clear awareness with a caring intention and warm heart creates steadier inner foundations.
  • Early education in emotional awareness could prevent many long‑term wounds, yet many adults are left to learn this work much later in life.
My wish for folks is that they find a sense that everything is okay no matter what happens.

Curious about how others manage emotional pain and turn it into something meaningful? This conversation brings together meditation teacher, author, and wilderness guide Justin Michelson with host Valeria Teles to talk about what it might mean to move “from wounds to wisdom”. Justin shares how his own life has shifted into “full-time healing mode” due to physical health issues, and how suffering can sometimes open a doorway to a deeper sense of connection.

Drawing from his book *The Dharma of Healing: The Path of Liberation from Stress, Pain, and Trauma*, he explains why so many people resist turning towards their pain and why that resistance can be perfectly understandable in a stressed, isolated modern culture.

He points out that humans have been conditioned for millions of years to move away from discomfort, yet “when we come to accept sickness, old age, and death, and loss of things we love, that’s not the end of the path. That’s the beginning.” From there, he suggests, beauty, joy, and connection can start to grow. You’ll hear Justin talk about self‑compassion as a practical tool rather than a fluffy idea.

He describes how being genuinely kind to our own thoughts and emotions can soften the tight grip of the self and open us to a felt sense of interconnection. Mindfulness alone, he argues, isn’t enough; we also need a caring intention and a warm heart. Nature plays a huge role in his teaching.

Living in a rural intentional community and guiding wilderness retreats, Justin sees forests, mountains, and oceans as teachers in their own right, saying that many are waiting for a new spiritual saviour while “those teachers are already here… all around us.” If you’re drawn to healing, spirituality, or simply trying to feel “more safe and connected” inside your own skin, this gentle yet honest conversation offers plenty to sit with.

What might happen if you stopped fighting your pain and got curious about it instead?
