Andrea Newton on Facing Suicidal Thoughts and Navigating Tough Talks

We also know that alcohol actually, although it might make you feel better to begin with, gives you a little bit of a buzz. And I got to the point where I intended to end my life. I'd got a plan about what I was going to do, how I was going to do it, where I was going to do it, when I was going to do it and, completely by chance, had a conversation with somebody that stopped me in my tracks.

Imagine hitting rock bottom, feeling like there's no way out. That's where Andrea Newton found herself, thanks to alcohol. In this episode of 'Tribe Sober', Janet Gourand sits down with Andrea, a Corporate Consultant and Mental Health Advocate, to discuss her harrowing journey through addiction and recovery. Andrea opens up about how alcohol led her to a dark place where she even planned her own suicide.

Her story is a stark reminder of the dangers alcohol can pose, especially when it's used as a crutch for 'Dutch Courage'. Today, Andrea is a beacon of hope, working with the National Centre for Suicide Prevention in the UK. She delivers workshops that teach people how to have crucial, life-saving conversations. One shocking statistic she shares is that the risk of suicide is eight times higher if alcohol is involved.

Moreover, 20% of youth suicides in the UK are linked to alcohol. These numbers are a wake-up call for anyone underestimating the impact of alcohol on mental health. Janet and Andrea also dive into the 'work hard, play hard' culture that glorifies heavy drinking and stigmatizes those who choose sobriety. They discuss how declining a drink can unfairly label you as 'boring' and even affect your career.

The conversation touches on socializing in early sobriety and how, ironically, it's often the drunk people who are less interesting. Andrea emphasizes the importance of finding support beyond traditional avenues like AA. She talks about the power of community and how reaching out for help can make all the difference. If you've ever struggled with alcohol or know someone who has, this episode offers invaluable insights and practical advice.

Join Janet and Andrea for an eye-opening discussion that could change how you view alcohol and its role in your life.
