Challenge Accepted: Firefighter Tyler Packer’s Journey from Tragic Crash to Second Chance

Episode Overview

  • Severe trauma can coexist with growth: Tyler describes meeting the definition of PTSD while also experiencing post-traumatic growth and a stronger sense of purpose.
  • A simple “challenge accepted” mindset helped him push through pain, lengthy rehab, and a doctor’s warning that he might never be a firefighter again.
  • Support systems matter: his wife, friends, and colleagues played key roles, while the absence of some people became its own source of hurt.
  • The Struggle Well programme gave him language, tools and connection that he now brings back to his crew through daily gratitude practices like “own the morning.”
  • Tyler stresses that “life is worth it” and encourages patience, reminding others that “things take time” and each chapter of struggle can eventually close.
“Life is worth it. Things take time, have patience.”

Tyler shares how he felt “at home” in fire stations from a young age, building a career that began in 2013 and grew on a simple family motto: “challenge accepted, prove people wrong.” That mindset was pushed to its limit on 8 April 2022, when his ambulance was T‑boned by a gravel lorry, the cab and box torn apart, his colleague and friend Brendan Basset killed, and Tyler left with severe injuries, including 11 broken ribs, a traumatic brain injury, and a coma that lasted ten days.

What makes a recovery story truly inspiring? This conversation with firefighter and paramedic Tyler Packer is aimed straight at anyone juggling trauma, identity, and a deep love for their work – especially first responders and their families. He doesn’t remember the crash, but he remembers the aftermath: waking to a body held together with plates, a trach in his neck, and a life that suddenly required 24/7 supervision.

He and his wife were left dealing with hospitals, strict visitor policies, a house that “felt like a prison,” and friends who stepped up – and some who didn’t. There’s humour in the mix too, like the endless Seinfeld reruns he later realised he hated, and his crew branding him a “golden retriever therapy dog”. A pivotal moment came when a doctor told him, “you need to be okay never being a firefighter again.” Tyler’s response?

“Challenge accepted.” After two independent medical exams and 434 days of hard graft, he was cleared to return to duty – something he’s been told is “absolutely unheard of” for injuries like his. Tyler also talks about the Struggle Well programme, how it helped him out of his “cave”, and why he now leads with gratitude at work, getting his crew to “own the morning” by sharing what they’re grateful for. As he puts it, “Life is worth it.

Things take time, have patience.” What small win could you honour today that might change your tomorrow?
