I love this concept of pre-addiction so much. I wish I had come up with it, but all credit due to Nora Volkow... addiction starts way before it is that severe. And so if we can identify mild substance use disorder, moderate substance use disorder, those pre-addiction stages, we have the ability to intervene, I say, before stage four.
When Dr. Nzinga Harrison’s teenage son asked to attend his first party, she knew it was a moment of truth. As an addiction psychiatrist and M.D., she had prepared him for years, but now those lessons would be put to the test. In this episode of 'Hopestream', Dr. Harrison joins host Brenda Zane to discuss her new book, 'Un-addiction: 6 Mind-Changing Conversations That Could Save a Life'. Dr.
Harrison's approach is both data-driven and easy to grasp, offering parents a practical framework to tackle substance use discussions with their kids. Dr. Harrison shares six crucial conversations that every parent should have with their child about addiction and risk. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing the early signs of substance use and creating an environment where open dialogue is encouraged.
The episode dives into the biological, psychological, and environmental factors that contribute to substance use disorders, providing listeners with a comprehensive understanding of the issue. The conversation also touches on the role of cultural influences and protective childhood experiences in shaping a child's relationship with substances.
