Breaking Free: Darren’s Journey from Blackouts to Alcohol Freedom
Episode Overview
- Starting to drink young and normalising heavy alcohol use can mask deeper self-esteem problems for years.
- Blackouts, money issues and relationship tension can be powerful signals that alcohol is taking more than it gives.
- Education about alcohol, combined with podcasts, books, journalling and community support, can make stopping feel like a logical choice rather than punishment.
- Shifting from seeing yourself as a victim to becoming genuinely curious about your own patterns helps turn abstinence into long-term freedom.
- Sobriety can restore relationships, self-respect, energy and clarity, revealing that there was nothing wrong with you underneath the drinking persona.
“I have to make a choice here, it’s either just keep drinking alcohol or lose my relationship – there’s your choice, very clear.”
Curious about how others manage their sobriety journey? This conversation on Tribe Sober brings together Janet Gorand and coach Darren for a raw, often funny, and very honest chat about going from chaotic weekends to alcohol freedom. Darren shares how his drinking started at 13, ramped up at university, and turned into years of heavy weekends in Northern Ireland’s drinking culture.
He talks openly about unpaid rent, lies to flatmates, two– and three–day binges, and that haunting walk through torrential Belfast rain that hinted something was badly wrong. But the real crunch point came later, at a wedding where he got blackout drunk, embarrassed himself, and nearly wrecked the band’s expensive equipment.
The next morning, as he walked the dog, he realised it was a straight choice: "keep drinking alcohol or lose my relationship." From there, Darren leaned into podcasts, Tribe Sober’s masterclass, quit-lit, journalling and community support. He became, as he puts it, "self-curious" – asking what alcohol had ever really given him and what lay underneath his drinking.
He and Janet chat about blackouts, brain health, sleep, self-esteem, victim thinking, and the difference between gritting your teeth through "abstinence" and feeling genuine alcohol freedom. One of the most moving moments comes when Darren shares that his partner said, "I fell in love with you again." He also explains how sobriety helped him drop a second "party" identity and realise that, underneath it all, there was nothing wrong with him in the first place.
Now a Tribe Sober coach, Darren supports others through the Breaking Free programme, bringing his mix of science, humour and straight-talking honesty. If you’re wondering whether alcohol is really worth what it’s costing you, this story might be the nudge you’ve been waiting for.
