I have to do a fact check on that one but I'm pretty sure I did. I wrote down in a journal years and years ago that one's ability to connect deeply with another human being is in direct proportion to one's capacity to be vulnerable. And for me, there was nothing more vulnerable than saying hi my name's Deb and I'm an alcoholic, but what it does through that vulnerability is immediately make a deep and meaningful connection, and all of a sudden within 30 seconds, I'm talking to people about the deepest darkest most awful things that have happened to them in their life, and you know that for me is, when I say there's nothing better, I don't mean that in terms of a happy thing because it's deeply disturbing and it's raw emotion, but it is deep connection with another human being, and for me that's what we're here to do.

Ever wondered what it takes to break free from a decades-long relationship with alcohol? Meet Deb Pascoe, a mother of two and business director, who opens up about her 35-year journey with drinking. In this episode of 'Behind The Smile', Deb chats with host Ash Butterss about the unraveling of her life when she moved to Singapore in her late 40s. Despite holding down a job and maintaining relationships, Deb was self-medicating her declining mental health with alcohol.

It wasn't until her family intervened that she took a hard look at her life and decided to go to rehab. Now seven years sober, Deb shares the peace and contentment she's found in sobriety. The episode is filled with laughter and deep reflections as they discuss topics like pseudo spirituality, the concept of being born an alcoholic, and the progressive nature of the disease.

Deb's story is a powerful reminder that it's never too late to turn your life around and find the peace you've been searching for.
