Beyond Addiction, Future of Addiction Treatment Today!

Kat Carley and Barnett Gilmer use a plant metaphor to explain how addiction begins and why simply detoxing rarely addresses the real issue. They link consumerism, achievement and substance use to a common misunderstanding about where happiness truly comes from.

Beyond Addiction: The Plant Metaphor That Reframes How Habits Begin

Episode Overview

  • Addiction is framed as an innocent attempt to feel better rather than a deliberate choice to self-destruct.
  • Visible addictive behaviours are compared to the top of a plant, while precursors like low self-esteem form the roots.
  • The "fertile soil" for addiction is described as believing happiness comes from external things rather than from within.
  • Focusing only on detox and stopping substance use can leave the underlying misunderstanding untouched, leading to relapse.
  • Lasting change is linked to recognising that the secret of happiness is found inside ourselves, not in drugs, achievements or possessions.
“Addiction is not the problem. It is the person's misguided but purely innocent attempt at a solution.”

What drives someone to seek a life without alcohol and other drugs? This first instalment of "Beyond Addiction" sets out to answer that by stripping addiction down to its basics using a simple but powerful plant metaphor. Admissions director Kat Carley and owner-CEO Barnett Gilmer from Gulf Breeze Recovery chat through a visual model: everything above the soil is the visible behaviour of addiction – the using, scheming and manipulating.

The roots represent the precursors such as "low self-esteem, getting prescribed something that's habit-forming by a physician, mental health problems". But the real focus here is the soil, which they describe as "the outside-in misunderstanding of where our happiness comes from". You'll hear them joke about cars losing their magic after the first payment, then link that same pattern to chasing feelings through substances, achievements, promotions or even childhood praise. Kat points out that "addiction is not the problem.

It is the person's misguided but purely innocent attempt at a solution" for peace and serenity. The conversation also touches on physical dependence and withdrawal. They explain how shakes, sweats and pain can trick people into believing detox alone is the solution, while the deeper issue – constantly looking "out there" to fix feelings "in here" – stays untouched.

That, they say, is why chopping off the visible "top of the plant" without changing the soil often leads to chronic relapse and switching addictions. Barnett and Kat round things off with a story about people searching high and low for the secret of happiness, only to be told it's "hidden in the last place that you would ever think to look, which is inside yourselves".

If you're curious about a fresh, non-12-step way of thinking about how addiction starts and why it persists, this conversation might get you reflecting on where you’re really looking for happiness.
