Unstuck from Fear: Is Anxiety Holding Back Your Sobriety?
Episode Overview
- Fear can function as both a useful warning sign and a crippling limiter; learning to tell the difference is key in recovery.
- Anne’s AAA approach—Awareness, Acceptance, Action—helps break fear into manageable steps and avoid rash, fear-driven choices.
- Replacing overthinking with small, concrete actions (“action alleviates anxiety”) reduces paralysis and restores a sense of control.
- Checking whether fearful thoughts are actually true, and asking trusted, spiritually centred people for perspective, prevents unnecessary chaos.
- Living in the present through prayer, meditation, and honest self-reflection can dramatically reduce long-standing fear and make decisions easier.
“Just because I have the feeling doesn’t mean I need to take the action.”
Curious about how others navigate their sobriety journey? This conversation from The Recovered Life Show drops you straight into the “Unstuck” room, where recovered people gather to talk honestly about fear and how it can quietly cap your potential. Host and sober coach Damon Frank teams up with co‑mod Anne to ask a blunt question: is fear keeping you from the life you know you could have?
Damon talks about how today’s chaotic world can push people into constant fight-or-flight, and how that rush of anxiety can even become addictive. As he puts it, some of us start “hitting the news just so I can get that little endorphin rush of things to be fearful about,” then end up paralysed instead of taking useful action. Anne shares her “AAA” approach: Awareness, Acceptance, Action.
She jokes that she needs simple tools for those anxious moments, then drops the line many will recognise instantly: “Action alleviates anxiety.” Sometimes that action is a single small step, sometimes it’s just going for a walk or calling the right person rather than someone who will simply commiserate. Several participants bring real-life examples to the table.
Pete talks frankly about being “fearful of my own shadow” and using the old saying “false evidence appearing real” to challenge thoughts about relapse, parenting, and money. Elizabeth describes moving from a life where “maybe 90% of the time I was living in fear” to one where prayer, meditation and living in the moment make decisions easier and less catastrophic.
Daniel and Moon both talk about trying new careers and big projects, highlighting how fear of failure shrinks risk-taking until someone believes in you—or you finally believe in yourself. If fear has you stuck, this discussion might get you asking: what’s the worst that could really happen, and can you live with it while you take that next step in recovery?
